We have just had new patio doors and four other windows fitted in our sitting room. The work was carried out swiftly and efficiently. Clearing up after completion was very thorough. There is one small crack in the edge of a trim which the fitter himself pointed out and promised to return and replace. We did immediately have very strong easterly winds and no draughty so very pleased.

Liniars innovative Modlok bi-folding doors were the first to be designed to incorporate a unique aluminium exo-keleton, providing outstanding strength, security and thermal efficiency.

Not a hybrid

Unlike hybrid doors and the inherent difficulties associated with them, Liniars Modlok incorporates an aluminium exo-skeleton for superb strength and rigidity.

Low Threshold Option

The Liniar Part M low threshold is thermally broken, adding to its energy efficiency is required , cutting down on installation time.

Higher Thermal Efficiency

Modlok bi-folds are manufactured from Liniars six- chambered Energy Plus profile, meaning that they can achieve a highly impressive U-value of 1.0W/m2K when fitted with triple glazing.

Why Liniar PVCu Products? 6th September, 2016

Whether the company you chose for your installation is well-established or just starting out, you need to be sure that the window system you choose and company you choose will offer you the very best in service, versatility and product development and innovation.

Many systems companies are using the same window and door profile that they brought to the UK marketplace more than 20 years ago. Over the years they have made improvements, but few have started from scratch with brand new design ideas, technology and machinery.

Liniar has bought together industry experts with more than 500 years experience to bring a fresh perspective, creating a choice of chamfered or sculptured profile that exceeds the expectations of the installer and the home-owner.

Liniar is a UK based and owned Company and all products are made in the UK.

Saving money on energy bills is also high on the agenda. It is possible for most window companies to achieve high energy ratings by adding expensive triple glazing, low-iron glass or thermal inserts – but how energy efficient are the profiles on their own?

Liniar profiles are not only completely lead-free, their EnergyPlus profiles have been designed with a six chambered interior, achieving an A+ WER as standard – without the need for making costly enhancements.

Being able to offer a full suite of matching windows, doors, bi-folding doors, patios and conservatories is not something all systems houses can claim. By listening to customer feedback and designing products based on market demand, Liniar can now boast one of the largest bespoke ranges in the industry.

Liniars patented double-action bubble gasket is seamlessly manufactured into all of the profiles – affording a continuous weatherproof seal, and no lumps or breaks in the corners. Liniars gasket has been tested and assessed to BFRC energy rating standard. The test results show zero air leakage i.e no draughts.

Liniar is also proud to have been the first UK system house to extrude all of its profile with 100% lead free PVCu. Consumers no longer have lead in their paint or petrol – so why should they have windows and doors that include it?

Here at Bude Windows & Conservatories Ltd we love to be able to offer new, exciting products to our customers and are proud to provide the extensive Liniar range of products.

Dear Peter

RE: Installation of Windows

I wanted to take a moment to send you a letter regarding the guys who came to install my windows.

Ryan and Rob who were with me most of the time or all week, could not have been more conscientious or helpful, I felt as though they treated my home as their home and where just as concerned with the finish as I was.

Badge and Dan who came later in the week carried on this trend and it was a pleasure to have them.

Please pass on my thanks to them and I look forward to dealing with you again in the future.

Why has triple glazing failed to gain market share? 3rd March, 2016

March 1, 2016 by Nick Dardalis

Why hasnt triple glazing won the hearts of the window buying public?

Its an issue often talked about within the door and window sector.

Understandably the glass manufacturers, spacer bar makers and others involved in the glass supply chain are all extolling the virtues of triple glazing. Many window and door websites will all largely state that their products are available triple glazed but rarely do you see a really concentrated approach to market triple glazing at the forefront of a website and as the must have latest generation window of today.

Whilst triple glazing is a better insulated glass than double glazing it is not substantially better. Therefore the cost of the glass versus the savings to be made simply dont make it viable. The case for triple glazing is not helped with window systems marking their already very good double glazed windows as very highly energy efficient with only two panes of glass, argon gas fill, low e coatings and warm edge spacer bars.

Despite a seismic shift to the window industry creating and marketing latest generation products at the high end market, the reality is many homeowners remain on a budget.

For many they simply want new windows in their home because theyre needed. Cost is an issue. This is a different kind of consumer to the one that is building the dream home with no expense spared.

Triple Glazing is simply not worth it.

The Green Age website is a very well known energy saving website. Even they dont consider triple glazing to be worth it. And we have to agree.

Window companies may market the energy saving properties of double glazing but the reality is that double glazing doesnt pay for itself. The payback time for standard double glazing is way too long already so why extend the payback period still further with triple glazing?

The Energy Saving Trust gives their estimates on money saved by installing double glazing in a property previously fitted with single glazed windows.

Not taking into consideration regional variations, the average price of replacing all the windows and doors with PVCu in a typical home is approximately 9500. With aluminium windows the price would be nearer 13000. With an average saving of 85-110 pounds on heating bills, it would take many decades to get the payback in energy savings based on these figures.

The long payback time on double glazing is rarely a consideration with todays consumer. This is because windows do much more than save you money on heating bills.

New windows, bifolding doors, a lantern roof and a contemporary glazed extension add value to a home, not just in the monetary value of the property but value to how we use our homes. This value far outweighs the cost versus money saved on bills issue.

Anyone looking to buy a house will have double glazing fairly high on their wish list. However its unlikely triple glazing will ever have that same appeal.

The British Climate does not need triple glazing.

In recent years we have enjoyed much milder winters and this is reinforced by the Met Offices assessment of winter 2014/2015.

As our weather becomes even more unpredictable is the case for not needing triple glazing stronger if homeowners are generally adopting the new that the UK is simply not cold enough to warrant triple glazing. Triple Glazing is the norm in Scandinavian and other much colder counties.

Triple Glazing has disadvantages.

Despite the obvious benefit of three panes of glass compared to two, there are disadvantages to double glazing. These include:

It is more expensive

The more panes of glass the more obscured the view.

Opening windows are heavier

Window components often need upgrading to accommodate triple glass

A home with already good double glazing wont see the benefit with triple.

Whilst triple glazing will reduce noise so will acoustic double glazing and secondary glazing.

In the same way that upgrades are available in all sorts of consumer products so triple glazing is a current upgrade on windows and doors. The choice to have it is very much there but it is up to the consumer to decide, with the right facts to hand, whether it would benefit them.

The window industry itself adapts quickly enough to changing trends and customer expectations. Its accepted that any new window or door today must have the facility for triple glass. The decision to have it remains with the consumer. However what we do see is the window industry itself failing to promote triple glazing opting instead for the already excellent credentials of modern aluminium windows and PVCu.

Triple glazing does have advantages for the right consumer and the right property.

In exposed locations and for passivhaus projects its ideal.

Specified correctly it can provide sound insulation for properties near airports or other sources of noise

With the right outer frame it can create highly energy efficient windows

Extension Planning Permission 3rd March, 2016

Building an extension is one of the best ways to increase the value of your home. Whether you want to extend your home to accommodate a state-of-the-art kitchen or create more bedrooms, an extension is the most practical way to increase space.

In 2008, new regulations were passed which class house extensions as permitted developments, meaning you may build an extension onto your existing home without planning permission, except in the case of listed buildings and buildings within a conservation area.

Extension conditions and limits

If you live in a general residential area, you are free to extend your home without planning permission, but there are conditions and limits for doing so. These limits and conditions are fairly straight-forward:

Your new extension must cover no more than half of the land surrounding your original home.

Your new extension must not be higher than the highest part of the propertys original roof.

Extensions built at the rear of a property with one storey have a maximum depth allowance of three metres for an attached property and four metres for a detached property.

Extensions cannot exceed 4 metres high.

If you are likely to exceed any of these limits, you will need to apply for planning permission through your Local Planning Authority. There are other conditions and limits for building an extension and so we recommend that you visit The Planning Portal for more information.

Buildings in a conservation area

If you live in a house thats in a designated or conservation area, you should consult with your Local Planning Authority prior to carrying out any work as you may need planning permission. This will depend on where your property is located.

Listed building extensions

Permitted development does not apply to listed buildings. Before you alter the structure or appearance of your listed home, you must consult with your Local Planning Authority. You will likely need listed building consent for your project to go forward, which is determined by your projects development plans.

It is a criminal offence to extend your listed home without listed building consent.

For more information on extensions, please visit The Planning Portal.

5 star review

I have just had my second job undertaken by Bude Windows and am really impressed by the professionalism. I live in an old farmhouse where very little is level. but the four windows were installed in one day, really neatly with no holes to fill in afterwards. The other thing I really like about Bude Windows is that they do not try to sell you more than you have stated you are interested in. They listen to you and respect you.

Liniar Flush Sash Casement Window 26th January, 2016

Flush sash windows are the latest exciting development from Liniar. They offer the realism of a traditional pre-1932 timber window combined with 21st century thermal benefits.

Many property owners require a traditional timber window frame, sometimes due to planning or environmental restrictions.

Timber frames tend to be expensive, need regular maintenance and can be difficult to replace.

Liniar recognised the need to develop a casement window frame that would fit into any property where the sash fitted flush into the frame and which could be foiled to look like traditional timber or to offer a sleek, contemporary finish.

Liniar flush sash windows, like the rest of the Liniar EnergyPlus window range, are A+ rated. They offer a lower cost window with higher thermal benefits than timber in addition to being fully secure.

Available in sculptured profile with the flush finish on external faces, 28mm double or triple glazing, internally beaded, with a wide choice of opening configurations, colours, finishes, hardware and glazing.

Liniar Bi-Folds beats Aluminium Counterparts 26th January, 2016

An independent testing and certification company has launched its own stringent new scheme to tackle the reputation of poor quality bi-folding doors in the marketplace. Despite other brands including aluminium door sets failing the exacting test requirements, the PVCu Liniar ModLok bi-fold is the first to successfully pass.

The Folding Sliding Door Scheme has been devised by Build Check to raise the bar and bring a greater degree of excellence and reliability to a product that is still increasing in popularity, in spite of some negative publicity from some homeowners who have been the victims of inferior installations.

Many aluminium systems, often perceived as much stronger and more durable than its PVCu equivalent, have so far fallen short of the mark during these tests whereas the Liniar ModLok bi-fold has passed with flying colours to disprove a common misconception.

Established in 2004, Build Check operates throughout the UK and Europe and has gone from strength-to-strength to become a highly respected provider within the marketplace, operating a management and quality system conforming to ISO/IEC 17025 (Testing) and BS EN 17065 (Product Certification) and accredited by UKAS and the BFRC.

Richard Bate, Build Checks Technical Director, explains why they started the scheme: There are a lot of poor quality bi-folding doors available out there at the moment. We decided to launch this scheme to assist homeowners in being able to choose a product that would be robust and fit for purpose.

This makes sense for companies too. If they can provide a quality product then it will save them time and money in the long run on call-outs, repairs and replacement parts.

We set the scheme up in August 2014 but have been unable to publicise it as we have been waiting for a product to successfully pass our stringent requirements and were very pleased that the Liniar ModLok bi-fold door is the first to achieve that.

There are three main sections to the test. Each product is put through 5,000 cycles by Build Checks articulated robot, weather tested to 800 pascals (a wind speed of more than 80mph) and able to achieve a minimum U-value of 1.8.

Weve put several other bi-folding doors through the test, including aluminium doors as well as PVCu and Liniar was the first to pass, says Richard. People might be surprised to hear that some of the doors did not even achieve 10% of the required cycles!

Our whole intention for this scheme is that it will be difficult to pass. There would be no point in launching it unless it was going to encourage companies to raise their standards and aim for their product to be the best.

Now that Liniar has achieved the required test levels, it can cascade the evidence to its fabricators. The fabricator will then be able to apply to Build Check to join the certification scheme and, subject to successful auditing of their quality system, manufacturing, installation processes and documentation, will be able to use the Build Check Folding Sliding Door Scheme mark.

Its taken until now for us to be able to announce a successful candidate but we believe that Liniars success will set the benchmark for other companies to aspire to.

Chris Armes, Liniars Design and Development Manager, is delighted with the news.

Were very proud that the Liniar ModLok bi-fold is the first to successfully meet the testing requirements of the scheme. Obviously we have tested it excessively ourselves and have every confidence in the product. Weve already put the bi-fold through its paces with our own in-house robot, which achieved 127,80

Bude Windows have looked after our needs for the past 10 years at several properties. Rather than trying to brow beat us into buying products that they have, like other glazing companies, Bude Windows will actually sit down with you and design a product that meets our expectations and requirements.

Bude Windows have built us an Orangery that is more than just another space, it is a room used daily. Custom built with brick walls and a specifically designed roof it fits and compliments a 150 year old property.

They have re-glazed a Victorian door with leaded glass, retaining the original character and they have replaced windows in several of our properties.

Without exception, they have proved to be professional, helpful and only a call away from any concern.

I have found Bude Windows also to be competitive for the service and after sales backup they offer. Peace of mind that the right company are working for me is worth a lot.

I would not hesitate to recommend Bude Windows for a complete all round service for a quality project.

The pretty seaside town of Bude, on the west coast of Cornwall, is a lovely location to visit at any time of year. If youre going to take a trip down into the West Country though, why not visit during one of the towns most exciting events?

Bude will be putting on the pleasantly titled Bude for Food Festival, taking place on the charming Bude Castle Lawns. There will be more than 70 traders exhibiting inside the big marquee showing off food, sweet and savory alike, in addition to a great range of beverages. With a separate picnic area, an array of street food vendors serving mouth-watering gourmet meals, and plenty of kids activities, visitors of all ages are invited to the Bude for Food festival, hopefully they'll all be hungry! In addition, visitors can enjoy celebrity chefs (big names such as Michelin-starred Paul Ainsworth and Cornish sardine champion Sanjay Kumar are amongst some of the top chefs who have submitted their RSVPs) in the demonstration kitchen theatre, showcasing some delicious dishes made from regional foods. There'll be a whole range of mastercalsses to get involved with, including learning the art of foraging with Eden Project's Emma Gunn. Local eateries will also be joining the festivities in the Restaurant Trail, which will invite attendees to collect stamps from the participating places all around town.

Not just solely about the food, the evenings of the festival will feature a comedy night with funny-man and Edinburgh Fringe Fest veteran Patrick Monahan on the Saturday and live music from some of Cornwall's finest bands; Freshly Squeezed and Antimatador on the Sunday.

This September, make sure you keep the weekend of the 18th-20th clear in your diary.

Is Your 10 Year Guarantee Worth the Paper it's Written on? 22nd April, 2015

We have just been out to change a door lock on a door we fitted 9 years and 10 months ago.

We do honour our guarantees, we have longevity in our favour, we are not here today working cheap for a quick buck and gone tomorrow, leaving your 10 year guarantee worthless.

A true saying ' The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten '

It would probably have cost 250.00 to have had that lock changed by an outside contractor.

A proper 10 year guarantee with a traceable Bona Fide Company is worth more than you probably think.

For further peace of mind our guarantees are Insurance Backed.

Another Happy Customer 12th March, 2015

Our installation took place in July 2014, with eight windows and two doors. I thought that reviewing immediately was not the best way, but to wait for about 6 months and see. I am very pleased to report that the installation crew were excellent and my wishes not to see lots of plastic trim/ mastic covering plaster defects were followed. I was very fussy about style and colour. We previously had wooden windows and I wanted the colour to be in keeping with the age of the cottage and so Rosewood was the perfect choice.

We had a problem during installation in that one of the wooden lintels was rotten. The crew worked around this and one of their team picked up a concrete replacement. This required the new window to be part fixed for overnight security and the lintel work was done and finished by lunchtime next day, including making good rendering. These people are top of the class - don't go elsewhere!!

Don't Leave Your Most Valued Possession To Chance 12th February, 2015

Double Glazing is one of the most broadly readily available improvements for the property owner.

Putting in double glazing to your property will save you money on your power bills and turn into a sound investment when it is time to sell your home.

When selecting a double glazing supplier ask how long the Company has been trading, the longer the better, particularly if the Company is offering lengthy standing guarantees, the last thing you want is to have your double glazing installed and the business goes bust two years later or the one man band has left town.

Ask the Company about their policy on buyer satisfaction, it is important that the double glazing Company has a high level of after sales care. Then, if something does go wrong with your double glazing you will not be waiting around for weeks for the installers to repair the problem, if indeed at all.

But dont just take their word for it, ask who will actually be carrying out your installation, ask for proof of their qualifications relevant to the installation, proof of certificates of Public and Employee Liability Insurance and genuine testimonials from existing customers.

Dont fall for the we dont employ salesman you only deal with us from sales to completion of installation , many times it will be found that there are no industry relevant qualifications or insurance and they are just winging it.

If a Company claims to be a Specialist, ask for proof!

Bude Windows & Conservatories Ltd have their own Qualified in house building team as well as fitting teams. Should a Company sub contract part or all of your installation, ask how this will affect your Ten Year Guarantee?, For example how will your conservatory base be guaranteed if the Sub Contractors are no longer around or trading.

Bude Windows are accountable for every part of your Ten Year Guarantee.

Dont go for the quick fix, cheap price option only to regret your decision a couple of years down the line, this is too much of an investment to gamble with your hard earned cash. If you need to pay a bit extra for quality and peace of mind over the next ten years then surely it is worth that extra investment.

A Good product does not necessarily mean a good installation, in as much as a good installation does not guarantee a good product. You owe it to yourself to have the complete package!

At the very least the installer should be FENSA registered.

Bude Windows are also proud to be members of the Glass and Glazing Federation ( GGF ).

In the words of the GGF themselves - They say that your home is your castle as it is one of the single greatest investments you can ever make. This theory applies whether you live in the home yourself or rent it out to others. If you ever reach a point where you want to make some sort of renovation or update your home, you need to be sure that you can find an installer you can rely on to do the job properly.

By employing a GGF approved member to carry out all your windows/doors/conservatory needs, you will be investing in workmanship and service of the very highest standard.

In order to become a member of the GGF, installers have to show proof of previous experience and meet a number of qualifying requirements. Once we are accepted as a member we are continually vetted by the GGF, and must follow their Code of Good Practice and we are expected and do work to standards as laid out in our Glazing Manual.

For added peace of mind, all consumers, landlords, who choose a recognised GGF installer will also benefit from the GGF, FREE conciliation service in the unlikely event that something goes wrong or they are left unhappy with the level of work completed. This seeks to resolve any disputes between members and customers in a quick and timely manner. The GGF also offer a Consultancy and Expert Witness service should housing associations, local councils and commercial organisations have issues with their glazing contracts.

For a lot more details go to their site at: www.ggf.co.uk.

Dont be afraid to ask the relevant questions, if the Installer is genuine he will be delighted to show you evidence and in so help the demise of the Cowboy / Rogue traders.

www.budewindows.co.uk - Ask away, we have nothing to hide - We don't do "Cheap" we do a Proper Job for a Proper Price.

Liniar PVCu Installation Widemouth Bay 20th November, 2014

A stunning new property at Widemouth Bay by MJ Builders Bude, windows, doors and Juliet balconies by Bude Windows in white Liniar PVCu profile.

Buyers Tips for Replacement Windows and Double Glazing 18th November, 2014

Replacing windows on your property can change the visual appearance of your home considerably. You should choose a style that matches your property and enhances its looks. This is particularly important with PVCu and Aluminium designs when they are fitted to older properties. Its a good idea to look at properties similar to yours in the area and compare the effect of various replacement window types. It is also a good idea to make sure you have adequate numbers of opening windows. Its been known for some salespeople to promote designs with very few openings and of a very simple nature.

The simpler the design and the fewer the openings the cheaper the window. Whilst you may end up with a price you like its more likely you will regret this option in the end especially as badly designed windows can turn out to be a very bad investment and even lower the value of a property.

With PVCu windows its a good idea to ask your supplier if the windows are fully welded or if parts of the window (transoms / midrails) are mechanically fixed. Mechanical fixing is generally a cheaper way of manufacturing. Its possible with wear and tear (especially on doors) that the mechanical (screw) fixing will split apart weakening the frames and reducing performance. Whilst mechanical fixing is not entirely a bad thing especially if done correctly - we would suggest you give preference to fully welded structures especially if all other conditions (price / quality of supplier) are similar.

Fitting double-glazing in replacement windows will provide some sound insulation. However if your primary motivation for fitting double-glazing is to reduce sound then secondary glazing, where you fit a new single glazed frame in front of the existing (prime) window frame, will be better. The greater the air gap the better the sound insulation.

Double-glazing will reduce heat loss through your windows by an estimated 10 12 %. You will save money on your heating bills. However it will be a considerable time before you save enough money to pay for the windows so dont fit double-glazing for this reason alone.

Where practical, try to visit a showroom or view other work carried out by the company. It is good to check that the supplier has an established premises, a supplier working from a mobile number and van could be here one minute and gone the next!

Most companies will require a deposit with order. Try and make the deposit as low a percentage as possible generally speaking 10% is normal. Avoid paying larger deposits than this unless your work is particularly unique / bespoke such as one off timber window designs. Its likely in these circumstances that suppliers will require higher holding deposits. You should also make sure that a fair percentage is withheld until such times as the work is completed to your entire satisfaction.

Check out the Guarantee and what it covers. A lot of companies now offer insurance backed guarantees. Do note however that these are really Insolvency Guarantees and only become effective if a company should go out of business.

Always enquire about the type of locks and security features being fitted. Most modern double-glazed replacement windows feature multi-point espagnolette type locking, which will also lock partially open in a night-vent position. It is possible to upgrade to shoot bolt locking or SAC bolt locks for additional security available. Always enquire what is standard and also what upgrades are available. Often for a little extra cost you can have a substantially better locking system.

With PVCU (Vinyl) windows in particular you will often hear a lot of arguments in favour of using an internally beaded window instead of an externally beaded window. Clearly, if the beads holding in the glass are on the inside of the window it will be more difficult for a burglar to remove the glass and enter your home.

Rarely will the cheapest price be the best for you in the long run. When comparing like with like please also take into comparison how long the company has been established and the quality of their guarantees. You may find two suppliers using the same PVCu extrusion and the same Glass. However if one supplier happens to be some window fitters doing private work at the weekends then please realize that their so called 10 Year Guarantee may be of less value than another from a more established company with a supporting infrastructure.

Ask your supplier if you will be responsible for making good around the new frames when they are fitted. Most suppliers will include this as part of their work but you should check.

Whilst PVCu and Aluminium frames are virtually maintenance free please note that the hinges and mechanical parts such as locks will need regular lubrication etc. The frames will also benefit from an occasional wipe down. Special PVCu frame cleaners are available.

For timber frames you will need to paint every 3-5 years or, if you are using hardwood, oil or varnish as appropriate. We recommend an annual spring clean for all windows and doors no matter whether they are PVCU, Aluminium or Hardwood.

Your relationship with your supplier is critical. You must feel comfortable with them. Try and imagine what it would be like dealing with this person if there were some difficulties.

It is especially important to remember that once work is started it will be difficult to go back on your decision without considerable inconvenience. So take you time and select well. Take a look at their previous work and ask for recommendations.

Is the contractor financially responsible?

The contractor should be able to supply copies of public liability insurance plus employers liability insurance.

Check that the supplier is affiliated with an industry specific Federation that protects you as the consumer the Glass and Glazing Federation is the preferred association. However the strict vetting that is required to join this federation means that a lot of Companies are not members.

Bude Windows & Conservatories Ltd are members of The Glass and Glazing Federation, Trustmark, and Fensa.

Passivdor from Solidor 22nd October, 2014

Passivdor - A Sustainable Entrance to Passivhaus

This new door division at Solidor has been specifically launched to address the growing need for entrance doors that meet the important Passivhaus standard. Whilst most composite door manufacturers can offer products that achieve a 1.1 W/m2 U-Value, the achievement of the strict 0.8 standard for Passivhaus is some considerable way off the vast majority of the industry. The standard is clear, it's not just a 0.8 U-value for a door slab, but for the complete installation of the door and this is a clear definition.

What is Passivhaus?

Passivhaus buildings provide a high level of occupant comfort whilst using very little energy for heating and cooling. They are built with meticulous attention to detail and rigorous design and construction according to principles developed by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany, and can be certified through an exacting quality assurance process.

Passivhaus buildings avhieve a 75% reduction in space heating requirements, compared to standard new build. The Passivhaus standard therefore gives a robust method to help the industry achieve the 80% carbon reductions that are set as a legislative target for the UK Government.
